So why do they use this system that forces us to give out our cell phone number?
To increase the security of their website?

To resell our phone number to advertisers?
In short, I don't know! But I do know that there's a way around it: rather than giving out your mobile number with impunity, there's a trick to bypass this SMS verification.

It's to use a few web services that offer you phone numbers on which you can receive your SMS messages.

Once the SMS has been sent, click on the number to see the latest SMS messages received.
